This 212 688 km2 island in Nunavut is covered with snow and
ice and dotted with glaciers and fjords. Ellesmere is home to a variety of
wildlife species including the wolf, caribou, hare, fox, seal, walrus, whale,
polar bear and birds such as the snow goose, oldsquaw, eider duck, gyrfalcon and
snowy owl.
Ellesmere and Ellesmere OC
The Ellesmere combines tradition and innovation. The results of research on
different hull shapes allowed designers to innovate, creating a kayak that is
both responsive and fast, two frequently conflicting characteristics.
With no need to consider reinforcement, designers closely examined the concept
of the hard chine developed as a result of Inuit resourcefulness.
Mirroring the elegance of traditional sea kayaks, the shape of the Ellesmere
combines the advantages of a hard chine and a rounded arch. Designers quickly
noted the importance of combining a shallow arched hull with a traditional hard
chine. A hard chine affords exceptional secondary stability, but the flat
surfaces of the shape increase surface contact with water. This additional
friction was decreased by replacing the traditional “V” shape with a
semi-arched shape.
The next step consisted of determining the ideal location of the chines in order
to improve kayak manoeuvrability. Solving this problem led designers to
developing another innovative concept, the reverse hard chine. Unique to BORÉALDESIGN,
this concept optimizes kayak behaviour during a lean turn. The craft tends to
bite the water, which in turn intensifies directional changes. The kayak's low
profile affords minimal resistance to wind, making rolls easier. Designed for
the experienced paddler, the Ellesmere is offered with a skeg, sturdy, anodized
aluminium footrests and an ergonomic seat. Two cockpit sizes and a day hatch are
available as options.

The mighty Saguenay
River is the only fjord in meridian Québec, and one of the deepest
and most beautiful in the world. It is subject to strong tides and
rapid changes in climate and environment. Seals and belugas inhabit
the fjord, and small rorquals and fin whales may be seen near its
mouth at the St. Lawrence River. With luck, you may even catch sight
of a blue whale.
The Saguenay is ideal for those who love to go on long expeditions.
Even fully loaded, the Saguenay offers a very dry ride in heavy
seas. The trade-off between primary and secondary stability make
this kayak a pleasure to handle in calm waters and through waves.
A pronounced rocker allows the kayak to change directions quickly
during lean turns. This kayak combines the speed of a long craft
and the responsiveness of a shorter kayak. Proper distribution of
volume along the sides minimizes wind problems.

Nanook is the Inuit
word for the polar bear. This white bear is sleek, with Herculean
strength. He lives and forages bravely in an eternally icy
environment. Reigning supreme in the glacial solitude of his
habitat, he is one of the largest carnivorous mammals in existence.
The Nanook is designed for individuals weighing 90 or more kilos
(200 pounds). This kayak has a deeper profile, offering ample room
for legs, thighs and feet. The cockpit and seat are larger to
accommodate larger-framed paddlers, yet the kayak remains stable
and highly responsive, cutting easily through waves. A moderate
rocker makes the Nanook easy to manoeuvre. Even when weighed down
during expeditions, the paddler will stay dry in strong winds and
choppy waters.

Alvik means walrus in
the language of the Inuit. The walrus is one of the most
remarkable marine mammals inhabiting the north. It is closely
related to the seal, the lion of the seas. The male of the species
is spectacular with his two long tusks shaped like sabres,
measuring between 26 and 60 centimetres in length. Adults can
measure 3.6 m in length and weigh up to 1,400 kg.
The Alvik is comfortable, light, quick and responsive. It slips
through the water with speed and grace, and its low profile
affords minimum resistance to wind. The Alvik is unique, certainly
the fastest in its category. Its long waterline and clean entry
provide excellent tracking. A moderate rocker enhances
manoeuvrability during lean turns. Accelerating quickly is easy
with this kayak designed for intermediate paddlers, but it is also
a good choice for skilled beginners.
